Perched on limestone cliff 70 metres above the Indian Ocean, this 11th century temple is one of Bali’s holiest sites. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali’s kayangan jagat (directional temples) and guards Bali from evil spirits from the SW, in which dwell major deities, in Uluwatu’s case; Bhatara Rudra, God of the elements and of cosmic force majeures.

Bali’s most spectacular temples located high on a cliff top at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. Uluwatu lies at the southern tip of Bali in Badung Regency.

Dedicated to the spirits of the sea, the famous Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple is an architectural wonder in black coral rock, beautifully designed with spectacular views. This is a popular place to enjoy the sunset. Famous not only for its unique position, Uluwatu also boasts one of the oldest temples in Bali, Pura Uluwatu. Most of Bali’s regencies have Pura Luhur (literally high temples or ascension temples) which become the focus for massive pilgrimages during three or five day odalan anniversaries.

Behind the main pagoda of Pura Uluwatu’s small inner sanctum, a limestone statue of a Brahman priest surveys the Indian Ocean-it is said the statue represents the founding priest Dwijendra. According to legend he arrived at Pura Peti Tenget, north of Kuta.

Being a popular surfing spot for the very experienced, Uluwatu offers a wonderful vantage point to view a spectacular sunset. Warungs or small restaurants perched on the cliff offer a comfortable spot to survey the vast Indian Ocean beyond and below the 100-meter-high cliffs with panorama on three sides.

With its warm water, extensive coral reefs and abundant marine life , Bali offers excellent diving and snorkelling possibilities. Some of Bali’s most interesting diving is found at Tulamben, where the shallow wreck War World II US cargo ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942, is now festooned with colourful corals and schools of tropical fish.

The wreck is very popular with photographers as it is totally encrusted in anemone, gorgonia and corals. The black sand provides an excellent color contrast for the incredible variety of marine life, which includes a huge school (literally 100s) of 10-12inch silver fish called Big-Eyed Travelly and over 400 other species of fish.

All the fish are very tame (partly as a result of some guides feeding them, a rather an environmentally-sound practice!) from the Goat fish and Wrasse that nibble around your feet and fins during entry/exit to the Unicorn fish and Surgeon fish which make a (slightly alarming the first time you see them!) beeline for your mask as you swim down towards the Wreck.

It is quite difficult to list what you will see because you’ll see just about everything in any Indo-Pacific Reef Guide book if you dive here. From the minute Angler fish, neon nudi branches, Ghost Pipe fish, shrimp/go by sets, through to the areas of Garden Eels and multi-coloured clouds of anthias and damsels and on to the schools of Sweet lips, Bat fish, fusiliers, Butterfly fish, the variety is amazing.

Then there are the invertebrates, the hard and soft corals, black corals, sponges with crinoids, sea fans, tunicates. If you dive early ie: first divers on the wreck (only possible if you stay overnight) you may see turtle. It’s the best time of day to dive the wreck.

Night diving on the wreck is great especially during the full moon. You may see Spanish Dancers, flashlight fish, phosphorescence. Where else in the world could you make such an easy – and varied – Night Dive?

The depth and location make the Coral Garden a very good, and popular, Night Dive on which you may see Spanish Dancers and flashlight fish.

In fact the diving actually extends much deeper than 12M, if you carry on down the sand slope, you’ll find barrel sponges with many surprises: juvenile Emperor Angelfish, Two-spot Lion fish, maybe a school of juvenile catfish; cleaning stations with shrimp and wrasse, a shoal of Razor fish swaying in their hiding place.

If you continue along the slope, towards the start of the Drop-off, you’ll come to a dry river bed, scooped out into a bowl-shape, marked by ridges radiating outwards. These ridges are often the best places in Tulamben to find unexpected specimens. Although it is certainly not an area for divers looking for a profusion of marine life!

Tanah Lot

Tanah Lot (Earth from the sea) is stunning 15th sanctuary located of Bali’s south coast, about 12 kilometers from Tabanan City and 20 kilometers from Denpasar, built a top a rocky mound that high tide is completely surrounded by water.

Most come here longing to catch a glimpse of the romantic Tanah Lot sunsets, a regular occurrence during the dry season. The temple of Tanah Lot stands on a rocky island just off the southwest coast of Bali.

One of Bali’s most sacred sea temples, Tanah Lot is dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. The temple itself is said to be guarded from evil by the sea snakes that inhabit the caves below.

The temple itself is not accessible to visitors, but magnificent views can be had from a variety of points nearby. Crowds especially gather on the terraces nearby to watch the glow of the sunset behind the temple.

Naturally, there are plenty of souvenir shops and cafes with a view to keep you well-supplied while doing so.

Sanur Beach

The resort area of Sanur has grown up around Bali’s largest traditional village and today boast excellent facilities for international visitor.

Sanur was Bali’s first beach resort but still retains its Balinese character and old style village ambiance. Sanur was once a fishing village has a sleepy charm where the cultural and religious duties of Hindu Bali are still taken very seriously.

Sangeh Mongkey Forest

It is located near to Sangeh village; the renowned 6 hectares of Bali Sangeh Monkey Forest are filled with giant nutmeg trees capable of growing as high as 40m. Sangeh Monkey Forest near the village of Sangeh, in southwestern Bali, has six hectares of forestland with giant nutmeg trees.

Populated by a large troupe of monkeys, this thick stand of nutmeg trees is believed by legend to have fallen out of the sky during a mythic battle between the gods, carrying with a battalion of Wisnu’s monkey army.

The main attractions here are the hordes of funny yet wise Balinese monkeys inhabiting both the trees and the temple, Pura Puncak Bukit Sari, found in the heart of the forest.

It is said that the temple was built by Anak Agung Anglurah Made Karangasem Sakti, a foster son of the King of Mengwi, Tjokorda Sakti Blambangan. When Anak Agung, who had practiced meditation since he was a child, grew up, he was divinely inspired to build a palinggih, a place of worship in the Sangeh nutmeg forest.

It was a symbol of the devotion of the king’s foster son to Ida Bhatara (God) on Mount Agung. The monkeys of the forest are believed to be sacred and indeed will approach anyone paying respects at the temple.

A small island of Bali’s southeast coast, Nusa Lebongan is popular for its white sand beaches and quiet pace of life. Several cruise operators offer day trips from Benoa Harbour.

Travel and visit to Jungutbatu in the north is the bigger village of the two with a myriad of hotels and cheap eateries, and traditionally used to attract the backpackers and the surfers.

The famous Kerta Gosa or Royal Court of Justice was built in Klungklung in the 18th century, displays one of Bali’s masterpieces.

The Kerta Gosa Hall of justice is a small pavilion adorned with fantastic ceiling murals. In the 18th century it was Bali’s Highest court of law.

The entire complex is known as Taman Gili , but the name Kerta Gosa is better known. Balinese culture has its own system called adat, meaning traditional law, but for serious offenses Kerta Gosa was the end of the line. Kerta Gosa is located right in the center of Klungkung next to the main roundabout. The gardens of Taman Gili, in which Kerta Gosa sits, were built in 1710.

The most impressive thing is the decorated ceiling containing terrifying artwork depicting good vs. evil.
